What to do if you smell gas
EMERGENCY CONTACT
If you smell gas inside your home or suspect a gas leak, immediately call the 24-hour NI Gas Emergency Service: 0800 002 001
When you call, be ready to provide:
SAFETY STEPS - ACT IMMEDIATELY
- Turn off the gas supply at the emergency control valve on your meter
- Open all windows and doors to ventilate the area
- Check all gas appliances to ensure none have been left on and unlit
- DO NOT turn the gas back on - the leak must be repaired by a qualified professional
- DO NOT smoke or use naked flames
- DO NOT operate electrical switches - don't turn anything on or off
- DO NOT use mobile phones in the immediate area of the suspected gas leak
- Ensure access is available for the emergency service engineer
IMPORTANT NOTES
- Stay away from the affected area until it’s declared safe
- Follow all instructions from emergency personnel
- The emergency number accepts calls from minicom telephones
