Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide: The Silent Danger

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that poses a serious health hazard. This toxic gas is produced when carbon-based fuels—such as gas, oil, wood, and coal—undergo incomplete combustion.

While carbon-based fuels are generally safe when used properly, they become dangerous when they don’t burn completely. During incomplete combustion, excess carbon monoxide is released. When inhaled, CO binds to hemoglobin in the blood with an affinity approximately 200-250 times greater than oxygen. This prevents blood from transporting oxygen to vital cells, tissues, and organs throughout the body, effectively causing suffocation at the cellular level.

What makes carbon monoxide particularly dangerous is its undetectable nature—you cannot see, smell, or taste it. Without proper detection equipment, this invisible threat can claim lives quickly and without warning, often while victims are sleeping or unaware of exposure.
