How do I turn on & off the natural gas meter?

How to Turn Your Natural Gas Meter On and Off

Locating the Valve

The pipe work on the left-hand side of your meter has a lever called the Meter Control Valve or Emergency Control Valve. This is your isolation point in case of an emergency.

To Turn Off the Gas

  • Turn the lever to the closed position (usually perpendicular to the pipe)
  • The lever should naturally fall into the closed position
  • When closed, gas flow to your home will stop immediately

To Turn On the Gas

  • Turn the lever so it aligns with the pipe (parallel position)
  • The valve is now open, allowing gas to flow

Important Safety Notes

  • Only operate this valve if you need to shut off gas in an emergency
  • If you smell gas, turn off the valve immediately and call your gas utility provider
  • When turning gas back on after an extended period, it’s recommended to have a professional check your system
