How to Turn Your Natural Gas Meter On and Off

Locating the Valve

The pipe work on the left-hand side of your meter has a lever called the Meter Control Valve or Emergency Control Valve. This is your isolation point in case of an emergency.

To Turn Off the Gas

Turn the lever to the closed position (usually perpendicular to the pipe)
The lever should naturally fall into the closed position
When closed, gas flow to your home will stop immediately

To Turn On the Gas

Turn the lever so it aligns with the pipe (parallel position)
The valve is now open, allowing gas to flow

Important Safety Notes

Only operate this valve if you need to shut off gas in an emergency
If you smell gas, turn off the valve immediately and call your gas utility provider
When turning gas back on after an extended period, it’s recommended to have a professional check your system
